YOUNG SCIENTIST SUCCESSES

Huge congratulations to all the girls who represented DCW in the BT ‘Young Scientist Exhibition 2018’.
All six students had a fantastic experience in the RDS. Catherine Moyseyeva and Rachel Werner won 2nd place prize for their project entitled ‘The physics of the trebuchet catapult’.
Well done girls on this fantastic achievement. Maria Ahmed and Alanna Mays won a ‘Best Display Award’ for their project entitled ‘ ’An investigation into the physics of a whirligig with the aim of producing a simple blood centrifuge that can be used in developing countries’. In this project the girls made a 20cent whirligig version of a blood centrifuge machine which can be used to separate out the components of blood. Approximately 2500 revolutions per minute are needed in a blood centrifuge and the girls managed to obtain over 4,000 revolutions per minute by spinning their version made from cardboard and ordinary string. Lilly Devitt and Isabelle Downey displayed their fantastic project on ‘Experimental and theoretical investigation of air resistance on falling coffee filters and ping pong balls’. The girls all really enjoyed the whole experience. A huge thank you goes to Mr. O’Brien for all his hard work and dedication working with all the students throughout the term.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Congratulations to the girls on the Student Council who raised €562.50 from their Christmas Jumper Day back in December.
Last week the Student Council representatives met with Warren Kavanagh, Captain of the Wicklow County Hurling team to present a cheque to him on behalf of ‘Gaelic voices for change’.
Gaelic voices for change is a voluntary group of past and present inter-county GAA players who, supported by the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and Women’s Gaelic Players Association (WGPA), have come together to form a community action initiative that shines a light on important social issues.
Their initial focus is on the escalating housing and homeless crisis. All funds raised go to homeless charities north and south including the Peter McVerry Trust, DePaul, the Simon Communities, Focus Ireland and the Capuchin Day Centre, Cope Galway, Thomand House and Novas in Limerick, and the Welcome Organisation in Belfast. The Student Council were delighted to meet Warren and donate their contribution to this very worthwhile cause.

The Senior Team travelled to St. Marys, Naas on Tuesday 16th January. Congratulations to the girls for playing such a great game in sleet and snowy conditions!
Unfortunately they narrowly lost. The first year hockey match against St. Joseph of Cluny was cancelled due to the weather but will be rearranged.
Well done to the 2nd year hockey team who travelled to Donabate Community College on Thursday 18th.
The girls put up a valiant fight and played very well. Unfortunately they lost. Their next match will be in a couple of weeks so best of luck girls.

WELLBEING

The 2nd year students are enjoying a month of ‘wellbeing’ during January.
The theme for last week was ‘Kindness’. At assembly on Monday the girls were read a reflection about kindness.
Following this the girls all received the name of a student in their class and were encouraged to do a random act of kindness for them during the week.
The girls have also been enjoying doing ‘mindfullness’ exercises during registration each morning with Ms. Cremin.
This week’s activity was ‘FEACH’ (Forget Everything And Colour Happily). This involves the girls getting to do some mindfulness colouring each day.
The second years have really enjoyed these exercises in wellbeing and mindfulness and the importance of this in our busy lives is evident.
Thanks to Ms. Cremin for planning these activities for the girls.
