Senior Hockey
The senior hockey team of 2022/2023 played their last league game at home on Monday January 16th against St Raphaela’s. Historically, this will be recorded as the last fixture to be played on the old grit pitch. Next week will see the welcome arrival of the crew to lay down the new Astro-turf pitch. It was an epic game which could have gone either way. It took the Dominican side a little while to settle and play the game that previous form dictated. During this time the defence remained strong and focused and frustrated the opposition. Raphaela’s were awarded several short corners but DCW denied them any real scoring opportunities. The game remained deadlocked at 0-0 at half-time. It was in the second half that the home side dominated possession, upping the tempo with their fluid passing, and putting the opposition under constant pressure. Unfortunately, no goals were scored and the game remained a 0-0 draw. Well done to all players on a fantastic team effort and a very successful season.

Congratulations to Heather McCann who was our weekly winner of 20 euro, the grand prize rolls over to next week. This is a fundraising initiative and the money raised will be used to directly support your children’s education and purchase resources for our school including IT equipment, sports equipment, classroom and teaching resources.
Breast Cancer Awareness
Catherine from Breast Cancer Ireland came in to speak to all Transition year students on Monday 16th. Catherine explained the importance of being aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer for both men and women. She went through a powerpoint which contained information on statistics and images that explained signs and symptoms.
Catherine also brought in a mannequin that presented signs of breast cancer so the students were able to look closely and feel for different lumps, rashes and skin puckering etc. Catherine emphasised the importance of early detection and that being aware of what’s normal for you will help with being able to notice any changes early on.
Catherine then demonstrated how you should check the entire breast tissue area and explained this should be done once a month at the same time each month.
Ember Leaders
The Ember Leaders travelled to DCU today for their Renewal Day. They met with other Ember Leaders from over 20 other schools to share their achievements so far, and new ideas for the year ahead. The teams did some reflection with Dr Lily Barry, chaplain of Marino College. The day finished with a liturgy in which each team presented a symbol that represents their group’s journey. The DCW Ember team created a campfire from wood and paper to represent the warming environment they have tried to create in DCW with their work this year.
Purple House Fundraiser
The students of 3 Emerald did a bake sale in Fatima Hall on Friday at lunch time, as a fundraiser for Purple House. They have already raised 76 euro from their lucky dip before Christmas. There was also a raffle. Just 50 cents for a strip. 3 strips for 1 euro. All of the money raised will go to Purple House. Well done to the 3rd years and Ms. Martin who continue to work so hard at giving back to the local community.
LCVP Interviews
The 6th year Leaving certificate vocational programme students in DCW finished part of their course requirement this week in the form of an interview. The marks awarded for this section of the course will go towards their overall result in LCVP. Well done to all of the students for their hard work and also to Ms. Scahill for facilitating.
Magenta Principle’s CPD
Ms. Scahill and Ms. Kelly attended a workshop on the Magenta Principles in Fitzpatrick’s Hotel in Killiney on Wednesday the 18th January. This was the final workshop in a series, which is focused around engagement, depth and challenge in the classroom. The Magenta Principles are a set of 10 concepts and the idea is to design activities in the classroom that put students at the centre of the learning. We are looking forward to sharing the knowledge with our students.
