East Coast Samaritans visit with the 5th Years

Representatives from East Coast Samaritans, Paul and Damian, visited our school to discuss their vital services. The Samaritans’ primary focus is providing non-judgmental listening support to callers. These dedicated volunteers undergo extensive training and willingly offer their time day and night without compensation. They assist callers dealing with a range of issues, such as bereavement, loneliness, exam stress, and relationship troubles. Samaritans volunteers span various age groups, starting from 18 years old, and the organization provides excellent support for those involved. During their visit, they distributed wristbands and pens featuring the 116123 phone number to our students. Additionally, a teacher support pack, mouse pads, and tea bags were made available in the staffroom, further highlighting the valuable resources provided by the Samaritans.

Model COP Conference

A group of 8 TY students recently headed off to the Model COP Conference. Here is the report from one of the students themselves:
May 10th, the WorldWise Global Schools committee in our school was kindly invited to a conference, where we would represent a country and outline their position in relation to climate change. The event took place in John Scottus Secondary School in Dublin, and multiple different schools attended.
Eight students from our school attended, and we were given four countries; Saudi Arabia, Chile, Australia, and the USA. As our assigned country, we gave a 1-minute opening statement to become aware of the others’ positions. Following the opening statements, there was an open debate where the representatives of each country were open to discuss how climate change is affecting them and how they plan to reduce emissions faster and more deeply. This brought attention to how countries could collaborate with and support each other. After a short break, we returned for the second open debate, where we made plans for collaboration to reduce carbon emissions in our countries.
Following the second debate, we learnt more about climate change and COP27 from guest speaker Cara Augustenborg. Cara is an American and Irish environmental scientist, media pundit, assistant professor at UCD, and a member of Ireland’s Climate Change Advisory Council and President Michael D. Higgins’ Council of State. She presented the real causes of climate change and how we can help individually. Next, we were split into four groups and moved into breakout rooms. Here, we discussed with other countries how we can collaborate across four key areas; cities, energy, oceans, forests and foods, to reduce carbon emissions in our country. Finally, we presented these ideas and plans and concluded the event.

The students involved were Jamie Larkin, Alanah Dalton, Daniela Tamani, Sarah Williams, Lara Faye Jameson, Alex Rose, Niamh Hughes and Tess Savoie
